Nationals lose slugfest to Marlins

Marlins at the plate: Former Nationals outfielder Matt Cepicky, first baseman Mike Jacobs and second baseman Dan Uggla drove in a combined 10 runs. Cepicky highlighted the scoring by hitting a grand slam against Ramon Ortiz in the first inning. The Marlins scored six runs in the first and third innings, and put up at least one run in the first six innings.

Nationals at the plate: Darryl Ward drove in the Nationals' first run with a home run off Logan Kensing in the fifth inning. Ian Desmond drove in two runs an inning later off Jesus Delgado. The Nationals' biggest inning came in the bottom of the sixth, when they scored six runs. Mike Vento drove in a run with a single to right in the seventh inning.

Marlins on the mound: Right-hander Josh Johnson pitched three shutout innings, while Kerry Lightenberg pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Nationals on the mound: Ortiz gave up seven runs on nine hits in two innings of work. He threw 55 pitches, 33 of them for strikes. Anastacio Martinez and Andrew Good gave up a combined eight runs, but none were earned.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 4-1; Nationals 1-4-1.

Up next: The Nationals return to Space Coast Stadium to play the Cardinals on Wednesday, while the Marlins take on the Red Sox in Jupiter, Fla. Both games start at 1:05 p.m. ET.
