The Nats have been looking for a backup infielder since they decided that Willie Harris was no longer part of their plans.
Cora, who is entering his 14th season, can play all four infield positions. Last season, he played for the Mets and Rangers and hit a combined .210 with 20 RBIs.
Cora is a career .244 hitter with 35 home runs and 280 RBIs. Besides the Mets and Rangers, Cora has played for the Dodgers, Indians and Red Sox.
If Cora makes he team, he most likely will serve as a backup to third baserman Ryan Zimmerman, shortstop Ian Desmond and second baseman Danny Espinosa.
Reported indicated last week that Washington was also interested in Jerry Hairston Jr. But some in the organization believe that his asking price would be too steep.
