Nats designate Martis for assignment
The Nationals designated right-hander Shairon Martis for assignment to make room for new addition Jerry Hairston Jr., the club announced Monday.

Martis, 23, spent the 2010 season with Triple-A Syracuse, going 8-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 27 starts. He made 15 starts with Washington in 2009, posting a 5-3 record and a 5.25 ERA in 85 2/3 innings. He also went 1-3 with a 5.66 ERA in five appearances with the Nationals in '08.

Martis can now be claimed off waivers by another team, with the Nats having 10 days to assign him to the Minor Leagues, trade him or release him.
