Nationals take first spring loss

Marlins at the plate: In the first inning, Alejandro De Aza took a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall to give Florida a 1-0 lead. Four innings later, De Aza drove in another run with a single to center. In the fifth inning, Jorge Piedra scored the third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Hermida. In the top of the eighth, Brett Carroll scored on a wild pitch by Charlie Manning.

Nationals at the plate: The Nationals scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning against right-hander Lee Gardner when Will Nieves scored on a throwing error by first baseman Gabriel Sanchez.

Marlins on the mound: Right-handers Ricky Nolasco and Chris Volstad pitched a combined four shutout innings.

Nationals on the mound: Right-handed Tyler Clippard started for the Nationals and gave up one run in two innings. Jason Stanford pitched two shutout innings, while Mike Bacsik gave up two runs in one inning.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 2-0-1, Nationals 0-1-1.

Up next: Washington returns to Space Coast Stadium to play the Orioles on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander John Patterson will face Baltimore right-hander Daniel Cabrera. The Marlins return to Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., to play the Cardinals on Saturday at 1:05 p.m., with Florida right-hander Dallas Trahern starting opposite St. Louis right-hander Todd Wellemeyer.
