Chico shaky in split-squad vs. Tribe

Chico shaky in split-squad vs. Tribe

at Winter Haven, Fla.
Sunday, March 9

Indians at the plate: The Indians jumped all over left-hander Matt Chico in the third. Josh Barfield and Andy Marte ripped back-to-back solo shots to left. And after Jason Michaels singled, Travis Hafner knocked him in with a single to right. Michaels later struck with a solo homer of his own. His came off Collin Balester in the fifth.

Nationals at the plate: Apparently, the Nationals left the majority of their offense back in Viera, Fla., where the other half of their split-squad was doing quite well. At Chain of Lakes Park, the Nats didn't get on the scoreboard until the seventh. Former Tribe prospect Matt Whitney, a Rule 5 Draft selection, tripled to center field to drive in Ryan Langerhans.

Indians on the mound: Jake Westbrook, pitching for the first time in a week as the Indians ease him back from arm soreness, worked three scoreless innings, walking a batter and giving up a hit. Masa Kobayashi followed with a perfect fourth.

Nationals on the mound: Chico went 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. The solo homer allowed by Balester was his only hiccup in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Grapefruit League records: Indians 5-5; Nationals 5-6.

Up next: The Indians will run into old friend Brian Anderson, who is in camp a non-roster invitee with the Rays, when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., for Monday's 1:05 p.m. ET game at Al Lang Field. Anderson won't be pitching, but, for the Indians, Paul Byrd, Rafael Betancourt, Tom Mastny, Jorge Julio, Jensen Lewis and Jeff Stevens will. The Rays will give the starting nod to Jason Hammel.

The Nationals will be at home against the Tigers on Monday. Left-hander John Lannan will make the 1:05 p.m. start opposite right-hander Justin Verlander. Tyler Clippard, Saul Rivera and Chris Schroder will also be available.
