Young taking baby steps in recovery

NEW YORK -- First baseman Dmitri Young was seen in the Nationals' clubhouse on Wednesday. Young is currently on the disabled list because of lower back pain.

Young said there are good and bad days. Wednesday was a good day, but there is no timetable on when he will return to action. Young has not swung the bat in a while. He said he is taking baby steps as far as his recovery goes.

"I feel good today," Young said. "Yesterday, not too good. Tomorrow, we will see."

General manager Jim Bowden acknowledged that Young's bat is missed right now.

"We have to get him healthy and back on the field," Bowden said. "He has a big fight with diabetes. He is a real threat when he comes to the plate, whether it's coming off the bench or playing first base. He can hit from both sides of the plate."
