VIERA, Fla. -- Looking for pitching depth in the Minor Leagues, the Nationals signed former Pirate and Astro Zach Duke to a Minor League deal. He is expected to start the season for Triple-A Syracuse.

Duke was best known as a highly-touted prospect with the Pirates after going 8-2 with a 1.82 ERA in 2005.

"It was a good move. Our depth isn't what it was last year," manager Davey Johnson said.

Duke started the spring with the Astros before getting released by the club on Tuesday.
