Zimmerman said the shoulder has been bothering him after making several diving plays this week. On Saturday, Zimmerman was taking batting practice -- with hitting coach Rick Eckstein observing -- when his shoulder tightened up on him. Zimmerman was scratched 30 minutes before the game started against the Marlins.
Zimmerman was scheduled to hit third, but Mark DeRosa replaced him at third and in that spot in the lineup.
It marked the second time in his career that Zimmerman missed time due to shoulder problems. In 2008, he missed 48 games because of a small labral tear in his left shoulder. Zimmerman said his current injury doesn't compare to the '08 injury.
"It's nothing," Zimmerman said. "It's something I could have played through. It was bugging me a little bit. I thought it would go away in a couple of days. I'm diving all over the place over there. It's like a jammed finger pretty much. Give it a couple of days and it will go away. We'll be good to go on Tuesday."
Zimmerman has played in 15 games this season, and is 13-for-58 (.224) with a homer and seven RBIs.
