Sore left thumb sidelines Guzman

LOS ANGELES -- Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman did not start on Saturday against the Dodgers and will not play Sunday because of a sore left thumb.

Guzman had an X-ray and it was revealed that he has a contusion in the thumb. Dr. Neal El Attrache examined the thumb in Los Angeles and suggested rest and treatment. Guzman is day-to-day.

Guzman hurt the thumb this week while hitting against Giants closer Brian Wilson. Guzman had problems with the same thumb in the past. He tore a ligament in the thumb in 2006 against the Indians and missed most of the season.

Meanwhile, Elijah Dukes is in extended Spring Training in Viera, Fla. The news comes almost three weeks after Dukes had right knee surgery. Dukes hurt the knee on July 5 while making a catch against the Reds in Cincinnati.
