Published reports indicated that San Diego general manager Kevin Towers may trade Peavy for prospects, but it's not going to be easy. According to the source, Peavy named six teams for which he would waive his no-trade clause, but Washington is not one of them. The Dodgers and Braves are reportedly the front-runners.
Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, was 10-11 in 2008 with a 2.85 ERA, which is far better than any ERA in the Nationals rotation. Left-hander John Lannan had a respectable 3.91 ERA for Washington.
Whether the Nationals will acquire a big-name free agent, such as Milwaukee left-hander CC Sabathia, remains to be seen. The team has been quiet since the season ended, and GM Jim Bowden and team president Stan Kasten were not available for comment.
