Nationals' Detwiler, Stammen join USO tour
WASHINGTON -- Nationals pitchers Ross Detwiler and Craig Stammen will join Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks, comedian Iliza Shlesinger and recording artist Kellie Pickler on the 2012 USO holiday tour led by the 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey.

Dempsey will lead the group on a seven-day, four-country tour to military venues. The dates and times are to be determined.

"I'm extremely honored. Not too many people get to go. I'm lucky to be one of them," Stammen said. "It will be an eye-opening experience to see what [the military does] on a daily basis, how things really are."

Said Detwiler: "I look forward to thanking the service members over there, just being able to thank them for fighting for my freedom, just letting me live the way I live over here."

Detwiler and Stammen were two reasons the Nationals won National League East title in 2012. Detwiler had a respectable 3.40 ERA and won 10 games, while Stammen had a 2.34 ERA in 59 games out of the bullpen.

This trip will mark the first USO tour for Hendricks, Detwiler, Stammen and Shlesinger, and the sixth for Pickler.

In other news, the D.C. Chamber of Commerce will honor Nationals manager Davey Johnson with the Chamber's Hometown Hero Award during its 2012 annual meeting and Chairman's Luncheon at the Washington Hilton on Wednesday.
