In February, Zimmerman avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.325 million deal with the Nationals, but both parties decided to keep talking in hopes of getting an extension done by Opening Day. Team president Stan Kasten has been dealing with Van Wagenen since March 1, when Jim Bowden resigned as general manager.
"When we were out in arbitration, [getting a deal done by Opening Day] was kind of said. They were going to work on it," Zimmerman said. "I don't think it's fair to any of the people [in this locker room to negotiate a contract during the season]. They should not be worried about my contract when we are trying to win games. We'll see what happens in the next day or two, and we'll go from there."
