Micah Owings is showing pretty impressive numbers in Spring Training. What are his chances of making the Opening Day roster, considering Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore are also backup outfielders?
-- Alex C., Montreal
Unless someone gets hurt, there is no chance Owings makes the Opening Day roster. He will most likely start the season with Triple-A Syracuse. If he continues to produce, it would not surprise me if the Nationals promoted him to the big leagues in May or June.
Most of the Nationals' starters are not showing good numbers in Spring Training. Should we be worried?
-- Curtis K., Washington, D.C.
The starters should be the least of your worries. They will be fine. For example, a pitcher like Dan Haren is still working on fine-tuning his pitches. He will be OK. I'm expecting big things out of him.
Do you think the bars that Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg have set for themselves this year will be too much for them to handle?
-- Kevin D., Washington D.C.
Not at all. Strasburg looks more relaxed this year. He is not worried about an innings limit and he is just trying to be one of the guys on the team. I think he is going to have a better year in 2013 than last year.
As for Harper, he is having a great spring and I expect him to produce during the regular season. What kind of numbers will he put up? Since he is hitting third, I expect Harper to drive in a lot of runs because he will have Denard Span and Jayson Werth hitting ahead of him and they are known to have high on-base percentages.
What do you feel are the plans with Eury Perez this season and beyond?
-- Andy C., Buena Vista, Colo.
He is going to start the season with Syracuse and may get a callup in September. I don't see him ever becoming a regular with the Major League team because you have Span for at least two years and then you have Brian Goodwin and Michael Taylor waiting in the wings. After this year, it would not surprise me if the Nationals tried to trade him for a pitching prospect. We'll see how it all works out this year.
