Span out of lineup to rest sore right ankle

PITTSBURGH -- Nationals outfielder Denard Span was given the day off against the Pirates on Saturday after hurting his right ankle Friday night.

Span hurt himself in the first inning, when he fouled a ball off the ankle. However, he stayed in the game until the eighth inning and even made two great defensive plays in center field.

"It's a little tender, a little sore today," Span said. "I got out here early this morning to get some treatment. There was a lot of swelling. I woke up this morning, it definitely didn't feel that great. I'm going to have the doctor look at it. I should be available later on in the game. But I think it's day to day."

Span was able to take some practice swings while watching the game Saturday and said it's 50/50 whether he will play Sunday.
