DETROIT -- Manager Davey Johnson said he doesn't expect the Nationals to make a deal by the non-waiver Trade Deadline, which is Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

The Nationals are looking to acquire a veteran bench player from the left side of the plate. Earlier this month, the team acquired right-handed-hitting Scott Hairston from the Cubs.

With left-hander Ross Detwiler out for at least another month because of a back ailment, Dan Haren being inconsistent and Taylor Jordan on an innings limit, one would think that Washington would like to acquire another starting pitcher.

"I don't think we are going to do anything. We didn't do anything last year," Johnson said. "We have the players we want here. We just need them to do what they are capable of doing. We're fine."

Entering Tuesday's action, the Nationals were in second place with a 52-54 record, nine games behind the Braves in the National League East. They are also 6 1/2 games behind the Reds for the second spot in the NL Wild Card race. The Pirates hold the top spot, 4 1/2 games ahead of Cincinnati.
