Struggling right-handers Jesus Colome or Joel Hanrahan also were candidates for a possible roster move, but general manager Mike Rizzo surprised the media by sending Martis down.
In his last two starts, Martis had given up 10 runs over 10 innings. He often was behind in the count. Rizzo felt it was better that Martis straighten himself out in the Minor Leagues.
"It's about taking care of the young pitchers," Rizzo said. "Shairon has to go down and do what got him to the big leagues -- pound the strike zone, execute his pitches and get ahead of the hitters."
Martis declined to comment. He was being consoled by Colome.
With Martis out of the picture, right-hander Craig Stammen will go back into the rotation. Stammen will pitch against Florida on Tuesday. The original plan was to put him in the bullpen. When approached by the media, Stammen said he didn't know he was back in the rotation.
"Oh, cool. That's the first I heard of it," Stammen said. "I don't know what to say. I don't have much to say. I will do whatever."
WAS: LHP Scott Olsen (1-4, 7.24 ERA)
Olsen has missed a little over a month because of a left shoulder injury. Acta said Olsen is strong enough to throw 100 pitches against the Marlins on Monday.
FLA: RHP Ricky Nolasco (4-6, 6.42 ERA)
Nolasco looked like the 2008 version of himself in his previous start. The right-hander won his second successive start after allowing just two unearned runs on seven hits in seven innings while striking out seven and walking just one against the Orioles. The 26-year-old has pitched well since he returned to the Majors on June 7. Nolasco looks to continue his success against the Nationals after beating them on Opening Day.
Adam Dunn became the 30th opponent to hit a ball out to Eutaw Street beyond Oriole Park. ... Willie Harris is 12-for-35 (.342) in his past nine games. ... Anderson Hernandez collected three hits on Sunday after going 3-for-25 in his previous eight games.
