Nationals release Cuban right-hander Maya

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have released right-hander Yunesky Maya, MLB.com confirmed Saturday. Baseball America was the first to report that Maya was let go.

Maya, 32, played for the Cuban national team and participated in the 2006 and '09 World Baseball Classics. In six Cuban National Series seasons, he was 48-29 with a 2.51 ERA, but he was a disappointment with the Nationals after signing a four-year, $6 million contract in 2010. He went 1-5 with a 5.80 ERA in 16 big league games.

Maya spent most of the 2013 season with Triple-A Syracuse, going 8-8 with a 3.87 ERA. He received a callup in May, appearing in one game and allowing two runs in one-third of an inning.

In other news, Tony Beasley will not be managing Syracuse this season. Instead, he will join Jeff Garber as a field coordinator. Beasley was the third-base coach for the Nats in 2006, and he managed Syracuse the last two years following a stint with Double-A Harrisburg in 2011.
