Nats deal Abad to A's for Minor Leaguer Wooten

WASHINGTON -- Almost a week after designating Fernando Abad for assignment, the Nationals traded the left-handed reliever to the Athletics for Minor League outfielder John Wooten on Monday.

Abad posted a 3.35 ERA in 39 games for the Nats this season, but he struggled against left-handed hitters. In fact, lefty hitters hit .306 against him. Washington had 10 days to trade Abad, reassign him to the Minor Leagues or release him.

As for Wooten, the right-handed-hitting outfielder played for Class A Beloit this season and hit .257 with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs. Wooten, 22, was Oakland's 37th-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

In two Minor League seasons, Wooten has hit .264 with 24 home runs and 108 RBIs. He can play the corner outfield spots as well as first and third base.
