SAN DIEGO -- Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon was not in Sunday's lineup against the Padres because of a sore right thumb, which he hurt in Friday night's game.

Rendon was able to take batting practice without any problem on Sunday. It was after that session when manager Matt Williams informed Rendon that he would not be in the lineup. It would not come as a surprise if Rendon was back in the lineup by Monday against the Giants.

Kevin Frandsen replaced Rendon for the second day in a row, hitting second and playing third base. Frandsen has good bat control and can protect Denard Span whenever he attempts to steal a base.
