Taveras added to Nats' outfield options

The Nationals added speed to their Spring Training roster by agreeing to terms Monday with outfielder Willy Taveras on a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Taveras is coming off a disappointing season, hitting .240 with one home run, 15 RBIs and 25 stolen bases with the Reds. This offseason, the Reds dealt Tavares to the Athletics before he was designated for assignment last week.

Taveras is best known for his years with the Astros. He helped them reach the World Series in 2005, which turned out to be his best season. He hit .291 with three home runs, 29 RBIs, 82 runs scored and 34 stolen bases.

The Nationals will have to pay Taveras only the Major League minimum of $400,000 if he makes the team. The remainder of his $4 million contract for 2010 would be paid by the A's.

If he were put on the Nationals' 25-man roster, Taveras would play all three outfield positions as a backup.
