CHICAGO -- Nationals manager Matt Williams' successful use of a challenge in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader helped out his starter, Gio Gonzalez, and preserved a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the sixth inning and a runner on first, Anthony Rizzo hit a weak grounder toward short. Ian Desmond was playing close to the second-base bag as part of a shift on Rizzo, so he had to range to his right and in before firing to first. Desmond's throw was high, causing Adam LaRoche to jump for the ball and come back down on the bag.
Rizzo was initially called safe on a bang-bang play, but after a one-minute, 15-second review, the Nats were awarded the out. Replays showed LaRoche's foot came down just milliseconds before Rizzo hit the bag, ending the sixth inning with Washington ahead by a run.
