Williams gearing up for Trade Deadline

MIAMI -- With the non-waiver Trade Deadline on Thursday afternoon, Nationals manager Matt Williams said he talks to general manager Mike Rizzo on a daily basis about moves to help improve the team.

"[Rizzo] has been extremely busy speaking to a number of people around the league about potential [trades]," Williams said. "We'll see what happens in the next 24 hours. It always comes down to the 11th hour any way."

While Williams declined to indicate the team's biggest need, it has become obvious that the Nationals need bullpen help. Left-hander Jerry Blevins and right-hander Aaron Barrett have not pitched well in the last month.

Washington could also use another hitter in the starting lineup after it was learned that third baseman Ryan Zimmerman most likely is out for the regular season because of a Grade 3 hamstring strain.

The Nationals could acquire a second baseman and keep Anthony Rendon at third base. It has been reported that the Nats had interest in Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre. If the Nationals were to acquire a slugger like Beltre, then Rendon would move back to second base.
