Nationals come up short against Marlins

Marlins at the plate: Gaby Sanchez was the hitting hero, notching two hits, including a home run in the second inning. Cameron Maybin also hit a pair of solo homers, in the fifth and seventh innings.

Nationals at the plate: Washington scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning, when Roger Bernadina came home on an RBI double by Ryan Zimmerman. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the team added two more runs. Wil Nieves had a sacrifice fly, while Willie Harris had an RBI single.

Marlins on the mound: Right-hander Chris Volstad lasted five innings and gave up one run on six hits.

Nationals on the mound: Right-hander Garrett Mock became the first Nationals pitcher to go five innings. He allowed three runs on six hits. Right-hander Shairon Martis allowed two runs in two innings of relief.

Worth noting: Mock hadn't walked a batter all spring until the first inning, when he walked John Baker, who scored on the homer by Sanchez.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 10-8; Nationals 3-13

Up next: The Nationals return to Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET for a rematch with the Marlins. Right-hander Jason Marquis, making his third start for Washington, has allowed 13 runs in 5 1/3 innings this spring.

The Marlins will send Josh Johnson to the mound for his fourth Grapefruit League start on Sunday, and the right-hander will be looking to go at least five innings. Johnson has nine strikeouts in eight innings this spring. Ronny Paulino is slated to catch.
